Random Acts of Kindness Challenge: Day #2

Random Acts of Kindness Challenge: Day #2 – Light Up the Office with Kindness

Hi, friends! 🎄

Day #2 of our Random Acts of Classroom Kindness Challenge is here, and it’s one of my absolute favorites! Today’s challenge is all about brightening someone’s day—literally—with a fun, crafty surprise for our school’s amazing office staff and security team.

Day #2 Challenge: Decorate Holiday Lights

For this challenge, students get creative by decorating a holiday light template. Each light is personalized with their name, so everyone who sees our display knows exactly who is spreading kindness. Once the lights are ready, we make a “sneaky” (and very giggly) trip to the office to decorate the secretary and security desks.

Pro Tip for Teachers: Teacher Tape! ✂️

If you’ve never used teacher tape, prepare to have your life changed! Years ago, a fellow teacher and parent gifted me a roll, and let me tell you—it’s been a game-changer. No more spending forever making those little masking tape loops for projects!

Here’s why I love teacher tape:

  • It’s super sticky, so decorations stay put.

  • It saves an incredible amount of time.

  • One roll lasts me an entire year, even with sharing!

Because it can be a bit pricey, I add it to my student supply list each year. It’s worth every penny. 1 roll lasts me more than a year - but I always add a new roll, just to ensure I don’t run out. And of course I have plenty to share!

Teaching the Tape Technique

To make this process smooth and fun, I explicitly teach students how to:

  1. Peel off a square of tape.

  2. Stick it to the back of their artwork.

  3. Wait to remove the backing until we’re at the office door (to avoid sticky mishaps).

I also assign a few “tape helpers” for anyone who struggles with the backing. My students absolutely love this job, and it’s a great way to build teamwork and independence.

Surprise Time! 🎉

Here’s the best part of Day #2: the sneaky delivery! We head to the main office with our decorated lights, trying to “sneak” in without being noticed (spoiler alert: we’re terrible at sneaking). There are always giggles, excited whispers, and a few not-so-quiet “shhh!” moments. Once everyone has placed their light on the desk or counter, we pop up and yell “Surprise!”

The office staff and security team absolutely love this moment. The joy and laughter are contagious, and it’s such a simple way to remind them how much they’re appreciated.

Why Day #2 is Special

This challenge is not just about crafting—it’s about building connections. Students learn the value of teamwork, the joy of surprising others, and the importance of recognizing the people who help our school run smoothly. Plus, the memory of trying to “sneak” into the office will have everyone laughing for weeks!

Kinder Kid at Heart

I've been a teacher for 16 years! I am Nationally Board Certified in Early Childhood Education and have worked hard each day to meet the needs of each student in my classroom! I taught Kindergarten for 13 years and transitioned to Gifted 1st Grade (2nd Grade curriculum). I loved both grade levels & have made many resources to help my students (and me!) be successful! I also enjoy traveling, eating yummy meals (IG: my.food.source to follow along with the meals my BF makes!) and trying new things.
